Bridal Shower Games
The traditional purpose of a bridal shower was to provide essential household items and induct the bride-to-be into her future roles as domestic manager and sexual partner.
These days, thankfully, domestic labor is a little more evenly split, and sexuality less taboo.
These fortunate changes mean that bridal showers can be more tailored to the bride, wedding theme, and attendees, rather than just being practical and/or embarrassing.
Organization of the shower usually falls to the maid of honor, but the responsibility can also be held by the mother of the bride or groom, a bridesmaid, or close friend. If you are the lucky woman in charge, don't be afraid to ask for help from your friends. The shower is usually held about six weeks before the wedding, and you should consider guests, invitations, food, beverages, music, decorations, themes, and, of course, games! Whether the shower is a staid afternoon tea, casual party, spa day, formal cocktail evening, or prelude to bachelorette party clubbing, games provide essential ice-breakers, opportunities for mingling, entertainment, prizes, and usually more than a few squeals, laughs, and red faces.
When choosing games and activities for the shower, make sure to take into account the range of guests attending, and how well they know each other. If they don't know each other well (or at all), choose more relaxed games as icebreakers. If the group is made up of close friends, you may choose more risqué topics and themes. Choose games that are appropriate for the age range (are there children or older relatives/friends attending?), and consider if this will be a couples or female-only shower (it has become increasingly popular for the groom and male friends to attend showers). If you are going to have a gift theme or activities that require the guests to bring something in particular, make sure all the details are included in the invitations.
To go along with the favors that every guest takes home, there should also be prizes for each game, and perhaps some door prizes, too. The bride and her guests will love any memento to remind them of the event.
