Stag & Hen Nights

Celebrate without the morning after headache!

In the UK they are called the stag party and hen night. In the US, they are bachelorette parties and bachelor parties. Traditionally, these are rollicking, wild nights before the wedding that celebrate the bride and groom's last night as an unmarried singles.  They can be a lot of fun, but don't let the fun on the night before you wedding spoil the wedding day itself with a headache, a hangover, or having yourself looking pale and washed out with dark rings under your eyes from a lack of sleep.

Stories abound about out of control nights that leave the couple, particularly the groom, a wreck the next day. After all the planning you've done in the weeks and months leading up to the wedding, don't ruin it by acting silly the night before your wedding, as so many people have done over the years.

Here are a few tips for celebratory stag and hen nights that won't leave you in regret the next day:

  • Too much alcohol will show up on your face the next day and in all your photographs for years to come, so keep it to a limit. Decide in advance how much, if anything, you will drink.
  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your wedding and your skin will look in much better condition and you will have a lot more energy. Especially for women, dehydration can be a common problem. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and take sips from it throughout the day.  You'll feel better on your wedding day and will be better able to handle the demands that are placed upon you.
  • If you feel as if your stag or hen night isn't complete without alcohol, remember that there will be plenty of time after the wedding to party it up without having to worry about the consequences the next day. Remind yourself that this is the most important day of your life and you don't want to spoil it by overdoing the alcohol or staying up till the early hours of the morning. Try limiting the party to wine only, and avoid the hard stuff.
  • Consider combining the hen night and stag night together. More and more couples are doing this so the women and men can both enjoy the occasion together.
  • Have a more civilized dinner party where everybody will still feel good the next day. On the actual day of the wedding, it is usually difficult to find time to talk to everyone. A dinner party with your good friends the night before gives you a chance to catch up with friends from far away, or just hang out.
  • Another popular trend is to have the stag and hen celebrations the week before the wedding. Take a long weekend with your friends to a spa or on a wine tasting. Take a day trip to somewhere fun, like an amusement park. Anything that is a little different or which you never get a chance to do.

There is no reason you have to follow the tradition of a wild stag night or hen night.  In fact, many of your friends well appreciate doing something a little different from the norm. Be creative and brainstorm with your friends to come up with something truly memorable for all of you.
